RYA Sailing Courses


  • We offer a wide range of sailing courses from the RYA syllabus to accommodate both complete beginners and experienced sailors wanting to develop their skills.

Queen Mary Course Progression Adult Sailing
Learn To Sail

Introduction to Dinghy Sailing for complete beginners.

  • Learn how to rig the boat and receive an introduction to the boat's controls before the group takes to the water to experience for the first time what it's like to helm a sailing dinghy alone (under the close supervision of an RYA Instructor.)
  • By the end of the course you should have an understanding of boat handling techniques and some background knowledge. You will be awarded the RYA Level 1 certificate on successfully completing and understanding the RYA Level 1 syllabus.

RYA Level 2

Develop skills and confidence to sail independently

  • RYA Level 2 builds on the skills learned, introduces new ones to support you along the way to becoming an independent sailor.   
  • By the end of the course you should be safety conscious, have a good knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing in light winds without an instructor. You will be awarded the RYA Level 2 certificate on successfully completing and understanding the Level 2 syllabus.  RYA Level 2 is the minimum qualification required to hire a dinghy.

Sail in doublehander dinghies to develop technique and skills

  • RYA Level 3 teaches you to be safety conscious and capable of sailing a doublehanded dinghy without an instructor on board in light conditions. Successful completion of this course is the ideal preparation (and pre-requisite) for starting the RYA Advanced Modules.
  • Depending on weather the course can include taster elements of seamanship, racing and spinnakers.

Improve doublehander helming skills and manoeuvres promoting independence.

  • Improve your doublehander helming skills and boat positioning by focusing on manoeuvres and seamanship decisions with the sole aim of developing your independence on the water
  • Manoeuvres include sailing backwards, sailing with no rudder or centreboard, anchoring, reefing afloat, recovery of a man overboard and being towed.

Learn how to use an asymmetric spinnaker.

  • Learn how to handle a modern asymmetric spinnaker, covering power zones and boat speed, balance, and how to hoist, gybe and drop a spinnaker.
  • The course follows the RYA Sailing With Spinnakers syllabus from the National Sailing Scheme, with successful candidates receiving the certificate on completion.

Improve tuning, handling, confidence and speed in performance boats.

  • Learn how to sail high performance boats with asymmetric spinnakers and trapeezes to deliver the ultimate thrill of high speed sailing.
  • By the end of the course you will be more confident in a high performance dinghy, both at high speeds on the water and with the trickeries of launching and recovering unstable performance boats.

Enjoyable introduction to Club Racing.

  • Focus on boat handling, starts, mark rounding, racing rules, tactics and tuning.
  • Learn and develop a range of skills required for understanding dinghy racing and getting out onto the race course for the first time. By the end of the course you should have the confidence and skills to venture out to try Club Racing for the first time.

Experience the thrill of sailing fast catamarans, and learn how to handle their speed and power.

  • Endorse your RYA Level 2 certificate with multihull recognition.
  • The course will be sailed using one of our Dart 16 or Topper Topaz 16 catamarans. Prior to attending this course you should have comfortably mastered the skills learnt on the Level 3 sailing courses.
  • PRICE £250: Two day course

  • Two and a half hour session on alternate Saturday mornings
  • Ideal for those consolidating their Level 2 skills, trying a new boat or simply to dust off the cobwebs!
  • Both single and doublehanded dinghies available
  • COST: £60

Come and join in the social side of the club on Wednesday evenings through out the summer at the same time as improving your sailing skills with the benefit of an instructor to guide you.   

  • Sailing session from 6:30 on a Wednesday evening
  • From 3rd April to 4th September, 2013
  • Supervised coaching and includes supper
