RYA Windsurfing Instructor Courses


  • To be considering these course we can assume you have a love for the sport. It is very rewarding to teach others. We will assist in your technique and focus on how you apply teaching methods to convey information.

  • To start on the path to a career in Windsurfing you require to have a good skill base and of-course a good deal of enthusiasm!

RYA Windsurf Assistant Instructor

Timing

This two day course runs from 09:30 to 19:00 both days. 

Pre-requisites

You should have passed as a minimum RYA Stage 3 from the Youth Sailing Scheme or RYA Intermediate non-planing, RYA beachstart and RYA non-planing carve gybe from the National Windsurfing Scheme before attending this course, and be recommended by the training centre Principal or Chief Windsurfing Instructor.  Please call to arrange an informal interview for recommendation.

Teaching
  • The Assistant Instructor (AI) is trained to assist qualified Instructors in teaching beginners up to the standard of RYA Start Windsurfing (National Windsurfing Scheme) and RYA Stage 2 (Youth Windsurfing Scheme).
  • The award is specific to the centre where the training is delivered.
  • The course covers the role of an AI at QM, teaching models, centre's safe operating procedures. Training will be based around the centre's fleet of training kit.
  • Successful candidates will be awarded the Assistant Instructor certificate.

RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor

Timing
  • This five day course starts at 09:30 each day, and the week will include several long days that run into the evenings and finish around 20:00. Course timings will be confirmed with candidates on a course by course basis.
Pre-requisites

Prior to attending this course candidates must:

Training

The course is run by a Windsurf Trainer, and covers the following areas:

    • Teaching techniques, ashore & afloat
    • The structure of the National Windsurfing Scheme and Youth Windsurfing Scheme
    • Techniques for teaching adults, children, and those with special needs
    • Preparation and presentation of a lesson
    • Preparation and use of visual aids
    • The assessment of students' abilities
    • The use of powered craft in a teaching environment
  • During the training course you will be expected to deliver a presentation to the rest of the group on a topic chosen by the course trainer. Prior to giving it, you will have had training input on how to deliver it.
  • The course is moderated by a RYA Trainer who has not been involved with the instructor training throughout the course. You will teach a group of students, and be assessed on the safe and effective running of the session. You may also be required to deliver a short presentation, possibly unprepared, on an aspect of windsurfing. More details of the moderation can be found in the RYA Windsurf Instructor Handbook (W33).
  • By the end of the course you should be able to effectively teach safe, enjoyable and educational sessions to adults or children. Successful candidates (also satisfying all the course pre-requisites) will qualify as a RYA Start Windsurf Instructor, and be able to teach the RYA Start Windsurf syllabus from the National Windsurfing Scheme or RYA Stage 1 & 2 of the RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme.

RYA Intermediate Windsurf Instructor

Timing

This four day course covers both the Non-Planing and Planing elements running from 09:30 until 19:00 each day. 

Pre-requisites for Intermediate Non-Planing Instructor

  • Minimum age 16
  • Start Windsurfing Instructor with at least 50hrs logged teaching
  • RYA Intermediate certificate plus beachstarting and non-planing carve gybe clinics
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • Hold a RYA approved valid First Aid certificate and be a current member of the RYA.

 

Pre-requisites for Intermediate Planing Instructor

  • Minimum age 16
  • Start Windsurfing/Intermediate Non-Planing Instructor with at least 50hrs logged teaching
  • RYA Advanced certificate with waterstart and carve gybe clinics
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • Hold a RYA approved valid First Aid certificate and be a current member of the RYA.
Training

The course covers the fast forward intiative with a huge emphasis of the course looking at teaching skills from a windsurf board as an alternative to from a powerboat.
